Synopsis

Earth’s climate is shaped by forces far smaller than any machine. This documentary follows microbes from the record methane growth of 2020–2022 back through billions of years of planetary history, when methanogens and cyanobacteria helped transform the atmosphere. It then returns to today’s wetlands, clouds, soils, glaciers and oceans to reveal methanotrophs, ice-nucleating bacteria, phytoplankton and engineered microbes—and asks whether organisms that have altered climate for eons can become part of our response to.

Why This Matters

Climate change is usually told through smokestacks, engines and carbon dioxide. This story changes the scale. It shows how microbial metabolism helped shape the ancient atmosphere, why microbial sources were central to the extraordinary methane rise of 2020–2022, and how microbes influence clouds, fertilizer emissions, glacier ecosystems and ocean carbon cycling. The documentary also explores an emerging possibility: instead of treating microorganisms only as hidden climate variables, scientists may learn to recruit.
