Synopsis
Drew Weissman transformed vaccine science by discovering how modified messenger RNA could enter cells without provoking the severe inflammatory response that had blocked earlier approaches. Born in Massachusetts in 1959, he studied at Brandeis and earned MD and PhD degrees at Boston University in 1987. After clinical training and an NIH fellowship, he joined the University of Pennsylvania in 1997 and began collaborating with Katalin Karikó. This documentary follows their 2005 breakthrough and the 2023 Nobel Prize.
Why This Matters
mRNA offered a fast, adaptable way to instruct cells to produce a vaccine antigen, but the immune system initially treated laboratory-made RNA as a threat. Weissman and Karikó's nucleoside-modification discovery overcame that barrier and enabled vaccines developed at unprecedented speed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
