Julian Schwinger displayed extraordinary talent from childhood, publishing physics research at sixteen and earning his Columbia doctorate at twenty-one. During the Second World War he developed microwave theory at MIT’s Radiation Laboratory. At Harvard he then constructed a rigorous operator approach to quantum electrodynamics, calculated the electron’s anomalous magnetic moment and created methods that spread across quantum field theory.
