Gabriel Cramer became one of eighteenth-century Geneva’s leading mathematicians through his teaching, international correspondence and editorial work for the Bernoulli family. His 1750 treatise on algebraic curves contained the formula now called Cramer’s rule and the famous puzzle known as Cramer’s paradox.
