Erwin Schrödinger changed physics in 1926 by formulating wave mechanics and the equation that still governs the quantum evolution of physical systems. Trained in Vienna, he held posts across Europe before succeeding Max Planck in Berlin. He left Germany after the Nazi rise, shared the 1933 Nobel Prize with Paul Dirac and later helped establish the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. This documentary follows the wave equation, the cat paradox and his influential attempt to connect physics with the nature of life.
Why This Matters
The Schrödinger equation is as fundamental to quantum mechanics as Newton's laws are to classical motion, yet its wave function raises deep questions about probability, observation and reality. Schrödinger himself challenged the dominant interpretation through the famous cat thought experiment. His later book What Is Life? also helped inspire molecular biology.
