The Mathematician Who Proved Chaos Can Settle Down

Synopsis

Cédric Villani transformed the mathematical study of gases, transport and equilibrium through work on the Boltzmann equation, optimal transport and nonlinear Landau damping. After training at the École Normale Supérieure and completing his doctorate under Pierre-Louis Lions, he became a professor in Lyon and later directed the Institut Henri Poincaré. This documentary follows the research that earned the 2010 Fields Medal, his celebrated book Birth of a Theorem and his unusual journey from mathematics into French.

Why This Matters

Villani's work addresses a deep question: how can a chaotic system of countless interacting particles settle into predictable equilibrium? His proofs linked kinetic theory, geometry and analysis, while his books and lectures made mathematical creation visible to a broad audience. His later political career adds another dimension, showing a scientist testing whether rigorous reasoning can influence public decisions. This documentary combines difficult mathematics, distinctive personality and a rare movement between.
