After studying at MIT and Harvard, he joined the High-z Supernova Search Team and used distant Type Ia supernovae to measure cosmic history. The 1998 result revealed the phenomenon now associated with dark energy and earned Riess a share of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics.
