The Scientist Who Reached Nuclear Fission Before the World Understood It

Synopsis

Pavle Savić played a crucial role in the chain of experiments that revealed nuclear fission. Working in Paris with Irène Joliot-Curie, he studied the products formed when uranium was bombarded by neutrons and found evidence that could not be explained by existing nuclear models. During the Second World War he joined the Yugoslav Partisans, and afterward he helped build Yugoslavia’s scientific infrastructure, including the Vinča Nuclear Institute. This documentary follows his path from radiochemistry to national.

Why This Matters

The discovery of nuclear fission is often reduced to a few famous names, but Savić and Joliot-Curie's experiments supplied crucial evidence immediately before the breakthrough was understood. His later life adds an extraordinary second act involving resistance, diplomacy, institution-building and high-pressure physics. This documentary restores a neglected scientist to the history of nuclear research while showing how scientific careers can be reshaped by war, politics and the need to build an entire research culture.
